We left Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA by car to Chicago and flew on Luftunsa direct from O'Hare to Dusseldorf, Germany. It was a nice flight but a bit turbulent. When we got on the plane it was nice to finally relax and be calm. We were doing things around the house right up until we left. I was also able to carry on my iMac which made me happy! I think it helped that we flew Business Class. We had a lot of luggage and our hope was that our rental car would fit it all. We arrived early (before 7:00am), picked up our rental car, and navigated the drive from Dusseldorf to Koln.

Chad did well on the Autobahn with a manual! We were met by our relocation agent, Jutta, and were able to get into our flat. We were excited because our Air Shipment met us at the flat around 9:00am and we were able to have a few things that reminded us of home (Chad's Packers blanket, Kelly's cruise mugs, and a few towels and pictures). The rest of the day was spent getting our stuff unpacked and resting a bit.
That evening we were welcomed by our landlord as well! Prof. Dr. Hossmann is wonderful and very kind, intelligent man who speaks some English! We are renting a flat that is connected to the north side of his home (you can take a look at the slide show on the blog). He is a cardiologist and professor at the University in Koln. He invited us into his home for water and Pringles. We spoke a bit and he informed us that if we needed anything we should just come down and knock.
That evening we decided to try and stay awake and go out for dinner. We went to an Italian restaurant down the street about 5 blocks. We got our choice of tables because the restaurant was empty when we arrived for an early dinner.

The picture is of the complimentary appetizer that they gave us, we really didn't know what it all was but it was good to try. Language was a bit of an issue but pizza and lasagna were easy to order and very tasty! This might be a regular hangout for us. Also we were reminded that Chad's beer is definitely CHEAPER than Kelly's glass of still water which comes in a glass bottle.
