I should start by saying it was nice to have my parents in town for two weeks to help with laundry and a big shout out needs to go to Chad for helping with stuff around our flat like laundry and cleaning. He's already busy at work but has been putting in extra overtime doing a whole lot more. We seem to go through a lot of baby clothes (Erin, you were totally right and warned me). It might take 5 keys and a few flights of stairs to get to our laundry room, but boy are we glad it is free!
Miss those fireworks...but hung out with Americans
It gets sad when you know that people back home are enjoying 4th of July traditions like fireworks, Summerfest, and not working. But we spent Sunday afternoon at a BBQ sponsored by the American Women's Club of Koln.
It was great to meet other families from the States and when we talked to a family that arrived last week we realized just how far we have come in the last few months. We have been able to navigate a lot around the city and also were able to laugh about things like car shopping, waiting for internet and phone, buying groceries, and waiting for our stuff to arrive. We made it through June! This group has been really helpful in our transition and hopefully we can participate in more activities.
We were also able to connect with a family from Michigan who I'm guessing we'll hang out with a bit and a couple who had a baby 2 weeks before Will. Max is a lot bigger and I think Will should just stop growing now because he's so cuddly, but I am willing sacrifice a bit more sleep for a growth spirt.
Will needs a schedule...or his mom does
Will continues to grow and is developing a personality. He was great at the 4th of July BBQ, but slept most of the day so guess what...he was bright eyed at 1:30am and wanted to play until 4:30am. He finally went back to sleep around 5:30am and slept until 9:00am. Let's just say, we are committing to try to keep to a schedule (or range) now. He sometimes will sleep for 5 hours and we need that to be when it's dark outside. It probably doesn't help that we like holding him and playing with him and he's so darn fun.
Grocery Store Story
Will and I went shopping today after we dropped Chad off at the office. I was so proud of myself because while we were in line an older German man asked about Will. I was able to communicate with him and tell him he was a month old and a boy. I also understood when he told me he had 4 girls. Our conversation was mostly in German and me nodding and repeating, but at least I'm learning.
He's still a great baby and we'll post more pics soon. Gotta love digital cameras!
