Chad and I went to yet another dealership and look at another car. There was this Mercedes A-Class (see the slideshow pics on the left). The price was right so we decided to look. When we arrived at this dealership we had a better experience than the others. Mrs. Schneider was friendly, eager to practice her English (which was quite good) and helpful explaining the German process of buying a car.
We looked at the car and then she arranged a test drive for us later in the afternoon. She also explained that we would need to provide proof of insurance if we wanted to purchase a car and that process could be quite expensive because it is based on your years of a good driving record. We decided we liked the car (and that a pusher/stroller would fit in the trunk) but we needed to confirm that we could get German insurance. Mrs. Schneider offered to hold the car for us until we met to sign a contract next week. This was very kind of her because the car could have been sold (like the others) in the meantime.
So we were off now communicating with State Farm to help prove our good driving records (yes they are good) and talking with a German insurance broker to help get us a quote.
Returning the rental car & riding the trains
We also returned our rental car back to the airport in Dusseldorf Friday night. We took the train from the airport back to the Koln city center. The train was packed until the first stop and then we managed to find seats for our 45 minute ride back. When we arrived back to Koln, Chad went into his office for a bit to make some calls back to the US (this is where the time change can be helpful because people were still in the office or working).
We then took the U-bahn or Tram back to neighborhood. It costs 2,30EURO a ticket but we managed to figure out the lines and made it home by 10pm. We were tired and hungry so I made some homemade mac & cheese with what we had in the house. It was a long, but very productive Friday and we're starting to learn mass transit!
